Mission

To develop, asses and validate methods for quality control of palm oil and oleochemicals, and evaluate the environmental performance of palm-based products to meet the industry needs and satisfy commercialization requirements, especially for new products developed by MPOB and industry.

Objectives

♦  To conduct R&D and develop new analytical methods to meet the need of industry in cases where no official methods are available and new methods need to be developed;

♦  To conduct R&D in environmental assessment processes with ultimate goals of environmental protection and                  sustainable development;

♦  To provide services in the area of analytical, ecotoxicology and LCA to support palm oil, oleochemical and other industry for market access in EU and other global market.

Strategic Research Areas

♦  Establishing quality profile for oleochemical products

♦  Develop new methods to meet the need of industry

♦  Quality monitoring on parameter and specifications of oleochemical derivatives

♦  Establishment of quality database on oleochemical derivatives

♦  Establishment of reference materials for oleochemicals

♦  Monitoring of toxic by-products in oleochemicals

♦  Monitoring of trace elements in oleochemicals

♦  Life Cycle Assessment – product footprint

♦ Ecotoxicology, i.e. toxicity and degradation of water-soluble and poorly water-soluble substances in freshwater,  marine, soil, terrestrial environment

♦  Environmental monitoring through bioconcentration, bioaccumulation, biomagnification and bioavailability studies

♦  Environmental risk assessment via monitoring in river, wastewater treatment plant, industrial area, port area

♦  Environmental modelling and simulation in laboratory and field trial

Quality and Standard

Objectives

1. To conduct R&D and develop new analytical methods to meet the need of industry in cases where no official methods are available and new methods need to be developed.

2. To provide services in the area of analytical assessment.

3. Quality and Standard concentrates on the R&D for product development with environmental compatibility and/or waste-to-wealth characteristics, detection of contaminants in oleochemical processes, and quality assessments of new oleochemical derivatives.

4. The QNS also involved in providing analytical services and maintaining SAMM ISO/IEC 17025.

Group Focus Area

 1.  Development of products with enhanced environmental compatibility.

 2. Waste-to-Wealth initiatives to promote circular economy.

 3. Detection and mitigation of process-based contaminants in oleochemicals.

 4. Establish quality profile for new oleochemical derivatives.

Environment Product Assessment

Objectives

1. To conduct R&D in environmental assessment processes with ultimate goals of environmental protection and          sustainable development.

2. To establish environmental profile of palm oil and olechemical products to ensure regulatory compliance

3. To provide services in the area of ecotoxicology and life cycle assessment.

4. Environmental Product Assessment Group conduct R&D in environmental assessment and remediation with ultimate goals of environmental protection and sustainable development, and establishing environmental profile      of palm oil and oleochemical products to ensure regulatory compliance.

5. EPA also provides services in the area of ecotoxicology and LCA in order to support oleochemical industry for market access in EU and other global markets.

Group Focus Area

 1. Ecological risk assessment of the risks posed by the presence of substances released to the environment on  all living organisms in the variety of ecosystems.

 2. Life cycle assessment framework, including carbon footprint, water footprint, GHG emission, etc., which analysers the potential environmental impacts of products or services during their entire life cycle.

 3. Environmental pollutant management by reducing or eliminating pollutant at the source or in the environment.

Quality and Standard

The rapid development of new palm-based chemicals and products has increased the demand for the assessments so as to ensure their quality, environmental friendliness and safe use.  The availability of the testing facilities is therefore very much needed to help the industry with establishment of data required for chemicals/products registration.

1. AOTD, MPOB offers a one-stop center for quality and environmental assessments of products.

2. The laboratories are accredited with internationally recognized systems, ISO 17025 and OECD GLP.

3. The results produced from accredited laboratories are accepted worldwide for regulatory compliance, product registration, marketing, etc.

4. Provide reliable, affordable and independent testing services to clients.
