Finding solution towards sustainable planting, ecosystem management and conservation is the key functionality and the main aim of this unit in embracing future challenges on biodiversity and climate change. This covers evaluation of ecosystem function in the vicinity of oil palm landscape, and its relationship with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, environmental change, conservation and biodiversity of tropical ecosystem, application and model plantation integrating ecosystem sciences, functions and services. Discovery from these research will become underpinning platform for testing, predicting and modelling of the solutions using the combination of science-based management and nature-based solutions for achieving sustainable management practices, followed by translation of science into policy and guidelines for the oil palm industry.

Plant Pathology and Biosecurity. The unit was established in 2011, and was formerly known as Plant Pathology and Weed Science (PPWS) Group, Plant Protection Unit, Biology Research Division.
 
Vision
To be the key research centre or reference hub on oil palm diseases with particular emphasis on Ganoderma disease, other oil palm diseases in Malaysia and research on exotic diseases to Malaysia & South East Asia Region.
 
Mission
To spearhead oil palm diseases research programmes by providing technical and scientific expertise for disease management and creating efficient advisory network to the industry in order to increase productivity and decrease yield losses.

To promote sustainable practices in oil palm management via integrated control of pest and diseases.

Goals
  1. To intensify awareness and better integration of biological control agents in pest management, reducing reliance on pesticides.
  2. To promote greater use of integrated disease and weed management with bio agents to reduce chemical use.
Function
To intensify awareness and better integration of biological control agents, to advocates combination of multiple control strategies to achieve long-term pest management solutions and to improve the economic benefits related to the adoption of IPM practices.

Entomology and Ecological Group
To conduct studies on the ecology due to the oil palm pests and also the beneficial insects vast diversity of form, function and life-cycle, their interaction with oil palm, other organisms and the environment.
Integrated Pest Management Group
To establish ecosystems approach to the control of oil palm pest and to coordinate use of pest and environmental information to design and implement pest control methods that are economically, environmentally and socially sound.

Background

Agronomy & Geospatial Technology (AGT) Unit was established in December 2012, through a restructuring of the Agronomy & Mechanization Unit to focus on specific research and development for agronomy and geospatial technology applications. AGT focuses research in the agronomic and fertilizer aspects for increasing yield, biomass utilization, sustainable FFB production, geospatial information technologies and remote sensing for precision agriculture.

To make the oil palm industry more competitive by applying knowledge and technological know-how towards an efficient oil palm production system, in harmony with the environment.

Mission
  1. To maximize land utilization, labour productivity and sustain high profitability.
  2. To ensure sustainable oil palm production through efficient oil palm production system.
  3. To promote integrated resources management, leading to sustainable and higher productivity of soil through optimum nutrient utilization and recycling of plant biomass and effluents.
