Ecotoxicology Testing Services

The Ecotoxicology Laboratories received the OECD-GLP compliance status awarded by Standards Malaysia (Registration no. Standard Malaysia GLP 007). Ecotoxicology tests are important for regulatory decisions when the data are used for registration purposes, classification and labelling of a chemical, hazard and risk assessment, during pre-manufacturing or pre-marketing to support approval of new chemicals in commerce, estimating thresholds for harmful effects and safe concentrations, setting limits on the range of concentrations likely to affect aquatic species at point sources of pollution, and controlling the disposal of chemical wastes, or to establish application rates at levels which avoid serious environmental impacts.

Biodegradation Testing

Biodegradation as the principal mechanism operating in sewage treatment plants and in the self-cleaning processes at surface waters, decides the fate of a substance in the environment and indicates whether it is likely to have a toxic effect on aquatic organisms. Biodegradation is the least expensive and most widely used technique for removing organic compounds from wastewater and is the primary mechanism responsible for their destruction in nature.

Ecotoxicity Testing

Ecotoxicity testing is aimed at finding indications of the nature of the effects (qualitative screening) and at obtaining a first estimate of the concentration ranges within which these effects occur. Mortality, reproduction, assimilation and growth are the parameters which can be measured reliably and routinely in currently available tests and which can be interpreted.

Mission

To conduct R&D for the development of sustainable consumer products utilising palm-based ingredients with the aim to increase their value.

Objectives

To conduct R&D and develop new or niche sustainable consumer products utilizing innovative palm-based ingredients.

Strategic Research Areas

Utilization of basic oleochemicals, oleo derivatives and palm bioactives for the development of cosmetics & personal care and household products;
Development of innovative delivery systems for cosmeceuticals, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals;
Establish the safety & efficacy of palm bioactives and explore its full potential in consumer products.

Consumer Product Development Group

Objectives

To conduct R&D and value-add consumer products (from new /or niche and specialty to convenience) containing palm-based ingredients/materials.
To explore and develop the utilisation of basic oleochemical materials in new/or niche and unexplored products segment.
To promote the utilisation of oleochemical derivatives in consumer products.

Safety & Efficacy Assessment

To conduct R&D on performance evaluation of palm-based ingredients/products, including the assessment of safety and efficacy.

To develop, asses and validate methods for quality control of palm oil and oleochemicals, and evaluate the environmental performance of palm-based products to meet the industry needs and satisfy commercialization requirements, especially for new products developed by MPOB and industry.

Objectives

To conduct R&D and develop new analytical methods to meet the need of industry in cases where no official methods are available and new methods need to be developed.
To conduct R&D in environmental assessment processes with ultimate goals of environmental protection and sustainable development.
To provide services in the area of analytical, ecotoxicology and LCA to support palm oil, oleochemical and other industry for market access in EU and other global market.

Quality and Standard concentrates on the R&D for product development with environmental compatibility and/or waste-to-wealth characteristics, detection of contaminants in oleochemical processes, and quality assessments of new oleochemical derivatives.
The QNS also involved in providing analytical services and maintaining SAMM ISO/IEC 17025.

Objectives

To conduct R&D in environmental assessment processes with ultimate goals of environmental protection and sustainable development.
To establish environmental profile of palm oil and olechemical products to ensure regulatory compliance
To provide services in the area of ecotoxicology and life cycle assessment.
Environmental Product Assessment Group conduct R&D in environmental assessment and remediation with ultimate goals of environmental protection and sustainable development, and establishing environmental profile of palm oil and oleochemical products to ensure regulatory compliance.
EPA also provides services in the area of ecotoxicology and LCA in order to support oleochemical industry for market access in EU and other global markets.

Group Focus Area

Ecological risk assessment of the risks posed by the presence of substances released to the environment on all living organisms in the variety of ecosystems.
Life cycle assessment framework, including carbon footprint, water footprint, GHG emission, etc., which analysers the potential environmental impacts of products or services during their entire life cycle.
Environmental pollutant management by reducing or eliminating pollutant at the source or in the environment.

Quality and Standard

The rapid development of new palm-based chemicals and products has increased the demand for the assessments so as to ensure their quality, environmental friendliness and safe use. The availability of the testing facilities is therefore very much needed to help the industry with establishment of data required for chemicals/products registration.

Innovation and creation of wide variety of novel bio-based polyols for polyurethane formulations.
